LUCA & URI

by: Nicholas Pilapil
directed by: Jon Lawrence Rivera
"The performances are utterly riveting. Each character beautifully realized, perfectly formed, wonderfully played. Believable, lovable, unmissable." NoHo Arts District

A world premiere play by Nicholas Pilapil co-produced by Playwrights' Arena and Victory Theatre Center

Nicholas Pilapil has written a love letter: to Los Angeles, to dreams, to love, and to growing up. Luca and Uri remind us of the things that matter when two people are in love. It talks about lives that are built together, dreams that get forgotten, and treats that celebrate the mundane. And all this against the backdrop of a city where dreams are born, lived, and destroyed every day. Nicholas’ writing and Jon Lawrence Rivera’s direction breathe life into a love story that spans a decade but feels like a lifetime. Like the celestial magic celebrated in the story, such a heartbreakingly beautiful story appears only once every decade. Come be a part of it. – Arnab Banerji, Dramaturg

  • "Under Rivera’s exacting eye for tapping into our often self-destructive and labyrinthine human condition, these two exceptional actors keep our interest riveted on their characters’ journey, though all the while wary since we are privy to how things devolve over their decade together. Kanazawa and Ruiz have an uncanny ability to make us totally believe these are two people deeply in love trying desperately to stay connected despite the distracting outside distractions of their careers and their individual maturation." Ticket Holders L.A.
  • "It’s not often that such a play can bring out quite a bit in its seventy-five minute running time... This play in its simplicity delivers." Accessibly Live Off-Line
  • "An exceptional two-actor play. The writer Nicholas Pilapil, brilliantly deciphers the relationship between the two lovers played by Kurt Kanazawa and Roland Ruiz, over ten years. Rivera beautifully directs." Culture Critique
